Emotional Resilience - What does it mean now?

Emotional Resilience is a big word, but if we were to simplify it would come down to simply developing skills that help us master our emotions better. In times of uncertainty, it will not leave us second-guessing ourselves or our way of life.

There are a lot of people navigating through this time in their own way, some are reaching out to others and others are just ensuring that survival is managed. There are some others who continue to live with their heads buried in the sand.

Each of these people has a lot at stake, their personal well being, their families, their lifestyle and their environment as they know it and they react as they know best. However, how our reactions are has a lot to do with how we manage our environment.

More often than not the two converge at a point. That point though is different for different people. For some external management takes precedence over internal management.

Mental Health Advocate and Psychiatrist, Dr Ruhi Satija, in discussion with our Director, Ms Nupur Pandey spoke about growing awareness on Mental Health issues and the need to maintain a positive atmosphere. That in itself leads to creating better management of the situation by taking better decisions. One such example was in our society when a neighbour had a panic attack and was unable to manage the situation. Another neighbour not only took charge in this very difficult time, spending time with her, ensured that the situation was under control and she was soon feeling better.

When we see this situation, we realize how effectively it was handled because our neighbour decided to act with composure- or emotional fortitude. When faced with a challenging situation, how we choose to react, and the awareness on what is causing us to react like the way we determine the first step to developing emotional resilience.

Once we achieve awareness, we are in a position to better control our internals and thereby take charge of the external environment. One can refer to tools like mood meter to further understand this in detail. It helps one understand what exactly one is feeling and also helps to take action to change the same.

Emotional Resilience is all about moving from a helpless state to a state of mind when one is in a position to do something positive. It is about taking charge of your emotional mindset. So go for it.
