A typical day in the life of HR person

When I got a mail for inviting write ups for the guest column in HR Daily Advisor, I was sure I want to send something. It had to be on HR was not a big deal cause I though that I have written before and some of my articles have also been published so what’s the big deal. But well life is not always the way we plan. Neither was mine as HR manager. So what’s its like being the HR person of an organization? That’s exactly what my article is about. A typical day in the life of HR person.

What does an HR person think when she gets up in the morning? I wish I was given as much credit for my work as any other professional.

On the way to office- Two interviews, one training, and oh that employee survey. And what do I do with the two departments which are going crazy over whose responsibility was it to get the paper signed. Why cant they just follow the rules and stop bringing their egos to work.

Once in office – Oh god I have got mail, and then a call from boss trying to tell me that one of the interview candidate comes with a recommendation so he needs to be given preference for the job, but to prevent dissatisfaction among employees it has to be ensured that it is done in a fair manner. For the second interview only 5 out of 20 called candidates appear and as a result, the choice has to be made from those five coz the position has to be filled on an urgent basis which means that the department heads would never be satisfied from the variety of candidates provided and in case of non performance (god forbid) the blame would come on the HR department for not providing good candidates in the first place.

Towards the end of the day: A call comes regarding an employee misbehaving with the senior and an immediate action is required. When I get up to talk to the employee on the issue, the manager does not support the action taken and tries best to make a mockery of HR department and its policies.

So at the end of the day, HR is lazy, unfair and irresponsible. And why because it is open to the perceptions of people.
